His books are read by entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 executives alike, and have been used as text books in universities around the world. He is the founder and CEO of Construct Zero, tech incubator and philanthropic research center. Their largest company, Simpleology, offers free software that lets you get 8 hours of work done in 2 hours -- you can get it here.

Josh Hinds: Why is Goal Setting important for success?

Mark Joyner: That question presupposes that it is. There are some people that are very successful without setting goals at all. Before we can say what is important for success we first have to define “success.” That definition is going to be different for everyone – and there’s a secret right there: figure out what you want. With that said, setting goals won’t hurt – as long as they are inspiring and attainable.

Josh Hinds: What do you believe are the necessary ingredients to ensure one achieves the goals they set for themselves?

Mark Joyner: Clarity, Inspiration, Attainability… It’s unlikely any goals without these elements will be hit.

Josh Hinds: How do you set goals? Do you have any special techniques or strategies that work best for you?

Mark Joyner: what we teach in Simpleology 101 explains the whole philosophy – but put simply: I think things to be clear, attainable, and short term. I also like to clear everything else from my path. The small distractions of the day add up to a life of zero accomplishment. Mastery over those minutia is essential.

Josh Hinds: Can you share an example where you've seen goal setting pay off with positive results?

Mark Joyner: Sure – years ago I set out with the ambition to become a #1 bestselling author. That’s clear enough, but I had to define what that means, how it can be attained, and then create a plan for attaining it. I did just that and now I’m a #1 bestselling author 4 times over – and my books are available in 23 languages, often used as university texts. I didn’t plan for those last benefits.

It goes to show that sometimes setting an audacious goal will pay off more than you expect. Just make sure you believe you can do it – and make it short term. I have serious doubts about the effectiveness of very long term goals. Life is too transient for them to remain relevant for long.

Yours in goal setting, Josh Hinds

-What was the biggest lesson you learned from the ideas Mark shared in his interview above?

*brought to you by GoalsSuccess.com

Interview - Phil Gerbyshak Shares Ideas on Accomplishing Goals

Phil Gerbyshak is the founder of the Make It Great! Institute and a self-proclaimed relationship geek; someone who knows all the tools, but also knows that people are what really matter in business, and in life. Phil enjoys helping others learn the simple strategies and tactics that make life great. You can visit him at PhilGerbyshak.com

Josh Hinds: Why is Goal Setting important for success?

Phil Gerbyshak: If you can see it, you can achieve it. A goal written down makes a dream visible, and lets you see what you're aiming it. Think of goal setting as a treasure map. The better the goal you set, the more specific of a goal you set, the better you can visualize it, and the greater chance you have of achieving it. That's why goal setting is so important.

Josh Hinds: In your opinion why do you think so many well intentioned people fall short of the goals they set for themselves?

Phil Gerbyshak: I fall short of the goals I set because I lose focus, and I get distracted by the latest "shiny object" or whatever is new and fun for me. I fall short because I don't stay the course to the end. I also sometimes fall short because I lose momentum and get right to the end, but not quite.

Both of these problems can be overcome by finding great partners to help you be accountable and achieve your goals, and this is something I am committed to doing in 2010 and beyond!

Josh Hinds: Can you share your best advice on goal setting?

Phil Gerbyshak: Three pieces of advice on goal setting have stuck with me over the years:

First, be as specific as possible in the end of your goal... but don't worry so much about the process. Stay focused on that end, and success will come.

Second, goals need rewards for achieving them. Sometimes the thrill of accomplishing a goal is reward enough, and sometimes you need something else to keep you driving towards what you seek.

Last but most importantly, don't do it alone. Share your goals with people who can help you be accountable to your goal. Ask for help when you fall down. And if you have a goals partner, you have someone to share your successes and struggles with. And life is way more fun when you can share it with someone great!

Josh Hinds: Can you share an example where you've seen goal setting pay off?

Phil Gerbyshak: I'm leaving my day job as of May 28th, 2010. It's been a 2 year goal to be a professional speaker and coach full-time. I put it out there and gave my manager my two year notice back in 2008. I've told everyone I know about my goal, even though they thought I was completely crazy for giving a two year notice.

I wrote 2 books, have done more than 60 speeches, written more than 1000 articles, and connected with thousands of people who have offered advice and encouragement on taking the next step.

Now I'm just a few days from seeing my goal become a reality. And I couldn't be MORE excited!

-what are your thoughts on the ideas Phil shared above? Going forward look for ways you can put to use the ideas he shared in your own life.

Yours in goal setting success, Josh Hinds

*brought to you by GoalsSuccess.com

Interview with Simon T. Through his prosperity workshops, books and CDs, he travels the world teaching that health, happiness, and wealth are possible for all who desire it. Visit him at RandyGage.com.

Josh Hinds: Why is goal setting important?

Randy Gage: If you don't have a clear goal, you don't really know where you are going and what actions will get you there. Setting a goal programs your subconscious mind and causes you to take actions that bring you closer to it. It also gives you a scoreboard to follow and know where you are in relation to where you want to be.

Josh Hinds: In your opinion why do you think so many well intentioned people fall short of the goals they set for themselves?

Randy Gage: I think a lot of people don't do critical thinking about their goals and often just adopt ones they think will be acceptable to others. Many don't write them down and clarify them. Your goals need to be bold and real to you, so they pull you toward them.

Josh Hinds: Do you have any specific techniques or systems people could put into place that would help them achieve the goals they set?

Randy Gage: I am a big believer in reinforcement things such as affirmations, prosperity maps, daily mantras, pictures on your refrigerator, mirror, steering wheel, etc. The more you feed your dream, the more emotional it becomes and emotion is a big driver to keep you focused and active.

Josh Hinds: Randy, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and ideas on goal-setting. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers along these same lines that would be helpful?

Randy Gage: I like to cover both bases and use negative and positive reinforcement for my goals. I will often "paint myself into a corner" by committing publicly to having something done by a certain date. This creates pressure in a good way to keep me working towards accomplishment of the goal.

I also use positive reinforcement, giving myself rewards for goals. If it's a small goal I may promise myself to get a massage when it is accomplished. For major goals, I may give myself a Hawaiian vacation or even a new sports car. Doing both angles like this keeps me always achieving goals and setting the next ones.

-I hope you found the ideas Randy shared helpful. Remember that ideas alone won't create positive change -- it's the application & implementation of the ideas you learn that can allow you to reach your intended destination!

Yours in goal setting, Josh Hinds

PS. If you found the ideas above helpful, be sure to join our free Goal Setting and Motivation Newsletter!

Goal Setting - Interview with Michael Angier on Accomplishing Goals

Michael Angier is founder and CIO (Chief Inspiration Officer) of SuccessNet -- a support network helping people and businesses grow and prosper. You can visit him at SuccessNet.org.

Josh Hinds: What is goal setting and why is it important?

Michael Angier: Goal setting is simply the process of deciding specifically what you want to achieve and how you plan to achieve it. Sounds simple, doesn't it? And yet most people are never taught how important it is nor how to do it.

Most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do setting goals for the next year--say nothing of the next three, five or ten years. Without goal setting, the rest of the world is determining where you are going instead of you. Other events and other people direct your course instead of you determining your own.

Josh Hinds: If you could share only one piece of advice on setting and achieving goals what would it be?

Michael Angier: It's hard to pick just one, but I would have to say be very specific. I hang around mostly goal-oriented people so they are already in the top 10% of all
people.

But even within this group, I find far too many that do not have clear specific, measurable goals. When asked what their goals are, only a very small percentage can answer in a way that indicates they are clear and specific.

Our unconscious mind works on specificity. It does not do well with vague generalities. So get clear. Be specific. Make sure your goal is measurable and that when you share it with someone, they "get it".

Josh Hinds: How important has goal setting been in your own life--can you share how it's had an impact on you?

Michael Angier: I've always been a directed and purposeful individual. But that's not enough. It was when I learned about the power of goal setting--about writing them down, getting specific with a plan of action, that things took off for me.

I have not accomplished every goal I've gone after. But I have achieved more of them than I missed. And even the ones I have not achieved have moved me further along the path of my success. When I look back at my life, I can tell the times that I was really practicing my goal setting and when I was not.

Other than the intensity of my desire, goal setting has been the most important aspect of my success.

-I hope you found the ideas helpful as you pursue all your goals and dreams!

And remember...

It's your life, LIVE BIG! Josh Hinds

PS. if you enjoyed the ideas shared above, be sure to join our free goal-setting and motivation newsletter!

*brought to you by GoalsSuccess.com

Goal Achievement - Interview with Edie Weinstein on the topic of Goal Setting

Rev. Edie Weinstein, MSW, LSW is a Renaissance Woman and Bliss Mistress who delights in inviting people to live rich, full, juicy lives. She is a dynamic and inspiring speaker, an interfaith minister. She is currently writing her first book entitled The Bliss Mistress Guide To Transforming the Ordinary Into The Extraordinary. You can visit her at www.liveinjoy.org.

Josh Hinds: What is goal setting?

Edie Weinstein: I view goal setting as part and parcel of focusing intention to create an outcome; whether it be a job, a relationship, or lifestyle change. It is a road map or compass that can be used to measure where we are in the process. It is the first step along the journey....but it is only the beginning.

Josh Hinds: Why is goal setting important?

Edie Weinstein: As the lyrics of the Joe Jackson song so wisely proclaim... "You can't get what you want, 'til you know what you want." There have been far too many times in my life when I settled for whatever showed up, because I wasn't aware of the power of goal setting, or didn't trust myself to use the tools effectively. Right brain, creative type that I have always been, I eschewed structure for fear that it would hamper my colorful style. Not so, as I discovered; indeed, it enhanced it. Goal setting allows us that framework, that foundation, if you will, on which we can build. Something solid to stand on.

Josh Hinds: Can you share your best advice on goal setting?

Edie Weinstein: 1. Get a clear vision of what it is that you desire to manna-fest. I like that spelling since once what I have desired, has come to fruition, it does feel like 'manna from Heaven'.

2. Embody that image....sit, stand, move and breathe AS IF what you desire is present in your life now.

3. Write a story about how it is in your here and now; the ways in which you live it.

4. Make your goals measurable and manageable. Such as..."by this date, I am completing 3 chapters in my book"

5. Make the goals believable. If you have difficulty imagining making $100, 000 a year...how about visualizing increasing your income by 20% for starters?

6. Gather encouragement from those who support your goals. Just as 'it takes a village to raise a child', so too does it take a village to see your dreams come to be.

7. Find ways to make the process fun. For example, a month or so ago, I joined a gym, with the intention of going 3-5 times a week. There are some days when I just don't wanna, so I call them my 'play-outs' instead of work outs, and call the experience 'sweating my prayers', visualizing my healthier, trimmer body as I exercise. By the time I leave, I feel great!

Josh Hinds: Can you share some of the ways setting goals has had a positive impact in your life, whether personally or professionally?

Edie Weinstein: In only every way. When I applied for grad school, I remember sitting down with a friend and writing the names of the schools and programs that interested me and the dates by which I would complete the apps. After a few months, I checked back in with him and had done those tasks. By the next term, I had been accepted into Rutgers University's School of Social Work from which I earned my MSW in 1985.

When I decided to become an Interfaith Minister, I treated the process and course work with the same degree of dedication and commitment as I had grad school; having a vision in mind of offering spiritual services as I have for the past nearly 11 years since ordination.

The most amazing experience from goal setting and visioning to manna-festation began more than 20 years ago when I had a a journalistic dream to interview His Holiness The Dalai Lama. In the interceding two decades, I seed planted by sharing my desires with anyone who would listen, created vision boards that had his picture on it, writing questions as if I would be interviewing him the next day and then....I surrendered the outcome.

Sure enough, on July 17, 2008, I had the opportunity, along with only one other journalist from the Philadelphia area, to spend 45 minutes in his presence and write about it. It is a poignant reminder that our deepest held dreams can become fully realized. The interview can be read on my website www.liveinjoy.org.

There is such a sense of gratification when I see the process from goal setting to tangible result. One thing that I have learned is that I don't always have control over the final outcome and sometimes things work out better than even I, with my vivid imagination, can conjure.

-I hope you found the interview above helpful & gained some helpful ideas on setting and achieving goals! If you’re like most people, you’d like greater wealth, more free time, and deeper connections with the people you love.

As we ring in 2010, we’re not only launching into a new year but a new decade. This is the perfect opportunity for you to create the life you desire.

Most everyone has heard about practical steps for setting goals. Yet, there is a lot more than a plan to achieve success. Read on to find out how you can create inspired goals that result in the life of your dreams.

Dream a Little...

Before you even begin on a goal, you first must determine what you really want in life. Make sure that your goal is something that you want to achieve. This is your opportunity to dream a little. Put aside your mind’s logical list and let your heart and imagination inspire creative thinking.

You might be musical and have always wanted to play guitar. Maybe you are passionate about horses and would find great fulfillment in working with them. Your passion might be real estate, and maybe you have always desired to learn about investing.

Write all of these ideas down on a sheet of paper. You may find yourself wondering, how can I ever do this? Don’t worry about the “how” right now; just focus on the what. For now, keep these ideas to yourself. You don’t want to be swayed by what others think you should do. Your only work is to dream a little. Believe in yourself and in your unlimited possibilities.

Prioritize...

After your dreaming exercise, you may have a list of a few items or you may have a list of 100 items. It’s fine either way. Your next step is to prioritize your goals. If you could only do one thing, what would you do?

Go on down the line until you’ve ranked each goal in order of importance. This is critical because you won’t likely achieve success at any goal if you try to do everything at once.

To start, you will only work on your top three goals. You have the list of the other goals, so keep them somewhere so you can review them later.

Getting Specific...

Now that you have your maximum of three goals, it’s time to work on measures. For each of these goals, what will success look like? For example, if your goal is to become a runner, success might be finishing a 10K race.

If you want to go to school, success might mean obtaining a college degree with a specific GPA. Decide what these are for each of your goals.

Once you know what success looks like, you’ll want to determine the “when.” How long will it take you to work up to running a 10k or completing a degree? Everyone’s timing is different, so you’ll really need to determine how this will fit in with all of the other activities and priorities in your life.

What if you don’t know how long something should take? That’s OK – just determine the next milestone you can figure out. Let’s use the running example. Maybe you’ve never run, and you’re not sure how many weeks you will have to train to run that distance. Perhaps you do know that your first goal is to run a mile.

So figure out how long it will take to run that far. Another option is to find expert resources. In any endeavor, there are people who have completed what you want to do. You can shorten your learning curve by asking others or finding resources for help.

With the outcomes and timing assessed, you now can figure out what you need to complete each day, week, month and year to accomplish your outcome. For example, if you want to complete college in four years, you may need to take sixteen credits each semester.

Each class will have specific requirements which will go into your daily and weekly goals. Write all of these details down. If you are familiar with spreadsheets, this is probably the easiest way to track your to dos.

Visualize Success...

Getting specific is much more of a left brain activity. This provides the opportunity to engage your mind in its task list. Equally important is activating your right brain. Your more creative side responds to visualization and affirmation techniques.

There are many methods for visualization. The key is to picture yourself having achieved your goal. What does it look like? How does it feel? How does this change your life? You can focus on visualizing in your mind or you can create a vision board in which you record pictures or images of your desired outcomes.

Go through magazines and clip out photos that capture what your end looks like. Or if you are artistic, use your own drawings and photos to tell your story. Put these images on a poster board.

Another powerful strategy is affirmations. These are statements in the present tense that state your goal as already having been achieved. Start by writing these down. For example, I am a college graduate with a 3.5 GPA.

Then spend time every morning when you awake and every night before you go to sleep reading these affirmations to yourself. You may find yourself saying, this isn’t true. But stick with it. You will find that after a while, your mind relaxes and the affirmations won’t bring about objections.

A final method is to act “as if.” If you were a published author, for example, how would you act? You might do public readings, develop a web site, or write articles on your topic. Start doing these things now. Just like in the affirmation exercise, your mind might object. That’s fine. Keep on track, and eventually, your mind will yield.

Keep Positive...

Striving for something new in your life may seem daunting. Along the way, you will need some support. Find like minded people to be your cheerleaders. Befriend people who have achieved what you would like to achieve.

You may decide you need a coach to keep you on task. At the very least, share your goal with people who will support you. When you are feeling discouraged, reach out to those who can buoy your spirits.

Equally important: avoid those people in your life who will dismiss your goals. Even people you love can be unsupportive when it comes to changes in your life. If you find this to be true, don’t talk about your goals with them. It may cause you to doubt yourself.

The Home Stretch...

If you’ve done all of the exercises listed, you will be well on your way to achieving your goals. The next decade can be a time of great fulfillment by reaching for your dreams. You just need the courage to take the next step toward goal setting.
_________________
Nancy Brook is an award-winning speaker, author and goal-setting junky. He is a prolific author and thought leader. Visit him at www.alessandra.com

Josh Hinds: What is goal setting and why is it important?

Dr. Tony Alessandra: Striving for and attaining goals makes for a meaningful life. Without goals, we are susceptible to feeling emotionally, socially, spiritually, physically, and professionally unbalanced. Goal-setting creates drive and positively affects your personality and character.

Josh Hinds: What is the best advice you could give to someone on setting goals and achieving them?

Dr. Tony Alessandra: Write It Down – Seeing Is Believing - Turn a nebulous thought into a bona fide goal by writing the goal on paper. Written goals are more official and strengthen our commitment. The visual reminder continually reconfirms their importance.

Push Beyond Comfort - A goal must be a challenge and motivate you to work harder. Set your goals beyond your reach so that you'll stretch beyond your comfort zone. The more you stretch, the more limber your goal achieving abilities will become.

Be Precise - Be specific with goals to avoid the lack of commitment that comes from being vague. Rather than having a broad goal of losing weight, be more specific: "I will increase my cardiovascular workouts by 10 to 15 percent.” This statement defines the increase that you are striving for as well as the range of the desired increase. In addition, it is a flexible goal, which tend to be more realistic.

Josh Hinds: Do you have any specific techniques of systems people could put into place that would help them achieve the goals they set?

Dr. Tony Alessandra: Define your goal. Your first task is to determine whether your goal meets all the requirements of the rules listed above. If it does, then write it as clearly as possible at the top of the worksheet.

Examine obstacles that stand in your way. This is a time to guard against negative assumptions and other self-defeating thoughts. Remember the definition of realistic. An obstacle blocks you only if you let it. You should also write down your innovative ways of overcoming obstacles.

W.I.I.F.M.—What's in it for me? Why do you want to achieve the goal? What kind of payoff is motivating you?

Plan your action. You need to carefully list the steps you will take which will bring you closer to your goal. The smaller the increments the easier they will be to accomplish. There is a German proverb that says, " He who begins too much accomplishes little." As the American Dental Association is fond of saying, "Don't bite off more than you can chew."

Project a target date for your goal. State your deadline range, such as, "between March 15 and April 1st." Think carefully about the amount of time you need. Too little time will increase the pressure and frustrate you. Too much time may reduce your drive.

Know how you'll measure your success. Goals should be described in terms of the final outcome of an activity rather than as the activity. This is part of being specific. Instead of saying "I will be running more in four to six months," you could say "I'll be running three miles instead of two miles in four to six months." How will you measure this? Probably by having one-third more blisters on your feet.

Josh Hinds: Dr. Alessandra, thank you for taking the time to share your ideas on goal-setting. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers along these same lines that would helpful?

Dr. Tony Alessandra: The dividends reaped by investing in yourself through effective goal setting are substantial. When you clarify your values and set goals in all the major areas of your life--mental, physical, family, social, spiritual, professional, and financial-- the right roads appear in front of you like mirages in the desert, yet they are real. Choices become infinitely easier to make because you are aiming at something specific, and you’ve taken a giant step toward hitting your goals...with amazing accuracy.

- I hope you found the ideas above helpful. What were some key takeaways you got from the ideas Dr. Alessandra shared? How will you go about putting them into action in your own life?

Yours in goal-setting success, Josh Hinds

Sponsor: WHAT IF YOU HAD THE SAME MINUTE-BY-MINUTE THOUGHTS AS THE SUPER SUCCESSFUL? Mike Brescia has developed the ultimate mental conditioning programs that can help anyone wipe out intense fears and enjoy huge successes in all areas of life. Learn more about these powerful programs here.

*brought to you by GoalsSuccess.com

Five Ways to Keep People Focused on Their Goals By Kevin Eikenberry

Goals, whether formally stated or not, are critical to all organizational success. We (hopefully) all have over-arching organizational goals; but on a more practical and immediately applicable level, we have project goals, productivity goals, quality goals, developmental goals, and the list could go on.

Setting effective goals is the focus of countless resources (drop by your favorite bookstore, run a search on Amazon.com, look on your personal bookshelf if you're unsure about that).

One way to improve your leadership skills will be to improve your ability to help team members set effective goals. And if your team doesn't have goals established right now... setting effective, meaningful goals needs to be your first task. Then, you need to help keep your team focused on those goals once they exist.

Here are five practical tips for keeping people focused on their goals:

* Remove distractions. People are busy (like you haven't noticed). They have lots to do and many things on their mind. The first, and perhaps obvious thing, you can do as a leader is remove distractions.

How? You do that by continuing to communicate about, ask about, talk about and align your communication with their goals. It is easier to stay focused when there are fewer competing messages. As a leader you can focus on your communication and conversation as one important way to reduce distractions.

* Review regularly. How often do you review your goals? How often do you encourage others to review theirs? Unless your answer is daily, you have room for improvement here! As a leader you can do any number of things to review regularly. You can review goals with your team as a part of regular meetings.

You can place key goals in emails. You can ask people to provide updates on their goals, and more. Think about your specific situation and you will come up with a variety of ways to make reviewing possible (and not monotonous). The real challenge, then, is to actually do it!

* Support through action. It is hard to maintain focus on a goal if you don't see how the goal can actually be achieved or how you`ll find time to actually work on it. You can help people focus on their goals by providing tangible support to them - including time, space and resources.

Help people carve out time from the schedule to work on their goals. Find people, information or tools that might help them achieve their goals more rapidly. These tangible actions will help people focus on and achieve their goals.

* See the success. People lose focus when they don't feel like they can make it and when they lose sight of the goal. This step goes far beyond reminding people of the goal - rather, it`s about helping your team visualize the goal in real and vivid ways.

It is also about helping them see themselves on the path to success. Help them do more than remember, help them actually see the success in their mind`s eye. When they have that picture, it will be much easier to maintain focus.

* Show your belief. If you really believe in someone`s ability to reach his or her goal and demonstrate your belief - it will be much easier for them to focus. Given that, here are three important questions about belief: Do you really believe in that person's ability to succeed? If not, why not? And if so, are you showing through your words (and actions, see above) that you do?

Making sure that people know you care and believe in them will help them remove large subconscious barriers to their focus and achievement. (And if you don`t believe in them, there are bigger questions to be asked, but that`s for another article!)

As a leader you (hopefully) want people to reach their goals. And in order for any of us to reach goals, we must be able to maintain our focus on those goals. You do have the ability to help people find and maintain that focus!
_________________
Kevin Eikenberry is a leadership expert and the Chief Potential Officer of The Kevin Eikenberry Group, a learning consulting company that helps Clients reach their potential through a variety of training, consulting and speaking services.

-what are some of the ways you go about encouraging and helping others to achieve their goals?

*brought to you by GoalsSuccess.com

Goal Setting Tips - Interview with Jim Donovan on Achieving Goals

Jim Donovan is a bestselling author, and motivational speaker who has touched the lives of thousands of people who want a better life, and a life and business coach. You can visit him at www.JimDonovan.com.

Josh Hinds: What is goal setting & why is it important?

Jim Donovan: Goal setting is crucial. If you don't take the time to decide what you want in your life, you're leaving it up to chance. And you probably won't like the result.

Josh Hinds: What is the best advice you could give to someone on setting goals and achieving them?

Jim Donovan: Stretch yourself. Small goals are fine but I believe you need some outrageous goals to get your juices going. It takes the same effort to dream big as it does to dream small so why not go for it? Big dreams and goals are easier to get excited about and easier to find people who want to play with you. No one wants to be part of a small dream. Why bother?

Josh Hinds: When it comes to goal setting -- what's the best way to find balance between pushing & pacing oneself?

Jim Donovan: I think the key is what is believable to you. Not necessarily what's "realistic." You have to believe your goal is, at least, possible. Also it's important to allow enough time for it to materialize. A goal of going from broke to a million in 3 months may be a bit out of reach but doing it in a year or two is more apt to occur.

Josh Hinds: Is there anything else you would like to share related to goals & goal-setting that might be helpful?

Jim Donovan: Make sure you're going for goals that are yours, not something you think you "should" want or something someone else wants you to go for. You're going to pay a price in time and effort and, since time is all you have, use it wisely. Make sure your goals are worthy of your life energy.

I hope you enjoyed the above interview. Feel free to use the comments to share your thoughts on it.

Yours in goal-setting success, Josh Hinds

PS. I'm available for keynotes, presentations, and personal development trainings. It seems that people want to make changes, but the changes just don’t stick.

Below are the top ten reasons that people fail when making resolutions.

1. Selecting goals out of obligation not inspiration. Have you ever chosen a goal because your boss, your spouse, or your friend thinks you should. Forget it! Unless you are inspired to make a change, you’re not going to invest in “should” goals. Instead, find something that inspires you.

2. Limiting thinking to life change versus life creation. We’ve already talked about being inspired by your goal. This doesn’t happen when you just focus on changing what you’re doing wrong. Most everyone knows that they should get out of debt, stop smoking and get off the couch.

The reason people don’t achieve these changes is that they are focusing on the negative. Focus on the life you desire to create versus the negative habit you want to stomp out. For example, instead of setting a goal of getting out of debt, decide to create a net worth of $100,000, $1 million or $5 million.

3. Not shifting the mindset to embrace the change. I believe the number one predictor of success is that your mindset matches the life you desire to create. The mindset that created obesity needs to shift before you can become the person of a healthy weight. Change doesn’t happen on the outside without a change on the inside. Techniques such as visualization and affirmations can help you make the shift.

4. Failure to write goals down. If you keep your goals in your head, they are fantasies that you might or might not do someday. Thoughts turned into words become deeds.

5. Not creating a specific plan. Writing down a goal isn’t enough. A plan of action will help you keep on track. What will you do when? How will you measure progress? What do you need to learn to be successful?

6. Letting ordinary life monopolize your time. It can be easy to let the activities of daily life interfere with your goals. For example, if your goal is becoming physically fit, you may all of a sudden think that you need to abandon your exercise time and instead use the time for shopping or housecleaning. Don’t let the practical excuses interfere with your goal work.

7. Trying to make a change without any support. You need people in your life who can help you achieve your goal. Remember, you don’t need to figure it out on your own. Find someone who can show you the way and also provide support as you make the shift.

8. Letting the doubts drown out the inspiration. It’s going to happen. You will have that negative voice that crops up once in a while asking you such questions as: Why you are wasting your time? Who do you think you are? Why do you want to make this change anyway? You need to be prepared for these negative thoughts by having some responses to answer the doubts.

9. Spending time with people who support your old ways. Birds of a feather DO flock together. At some level, you associate with the people you do because they support your act. When you decide to set new goals for yourself, the people closest to you may feel threatened and try to discourage your change. Try to limit your time with the naysayers when you first start making your shift.

10. Not celebrating success along the way. Congratulate yourself for your small achievements. You are making changes that will culminate into a different way of being.
_________________
Nancy Brook is an award-winning speaker, author and goal-setting junky. Hughes

Dreams

What is your dream? Everyone has at least one. You were born with the ability to dream. Some people never go for their dream. They are not committed to achieving their dream.

Others may start on the path to achieving their dream, but those they count upon for support - friends, family, teammates, and/or co-workers tell them their dream is too much work, too hard, too silly.... so they abandon their dream.

Still others begin the journey only to have detours get in their way.... and they give up. They are willing to settle for "good enough," however "good enough" never is. And then there are the dreamers who are willing to do WIT -"whatever it takes" to achieve their dreams.

Why dreams are important:

• They provide us with the passion necessary to reach our goals

• They give us direction

• They give us hope

• They grab us and move us

Discipline

For me, when I was coaching, the word Discipline was quite simple. My players understood that discipline meant they were where they were supposed to be, when they were supposed to be there, doing what they were supposed to be doing. In other words, discipline means doing the right things at the right time and for the right reasons.

And it doesn't matter - professional, businessman, teacher, student, athlete - discipline should hold the same meaning. Be accountable for your actions. Be on time for meetings, practice, appointments.

Carry out your assignment to the best of your ability - without excuses. Own up to mistakes and failures, and resolve to improve your performance - and then take the action necessary to do so.

Desire

"The starting point for all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat." -- Napoleon Hill

Just what is it you want out of life? The dictionary defines desire - to wish for; to want something very strongly. There is an old saying, "if wishes were horses, beggars would ride." Wishing for something is not enough. You have to want it, being willing to work for it, be willing to do whatever it legally takes to achieve it.

Last night must have been Will Smith night on TV. It seemed that every cable channel had Will Smith in a movie. But I settled on one movie for the umpteenth time - "The Pursuit of Happyness." The movie was inspired by the real life story of Chris Gardner.

Gardner was a struggling salesman. His girlfriend walks out on him, leaving him with his 5 year old son, and his desire to be a success. Gardner lands a position as an unpaid intern in the highly competitive stockbroker training program.

Evicted from his home, Gardner and his son are forced to sleep on the street, in public shelters, and in a locked Metro station bathroom. His desire to succeed and the love of his son helps Gardner succeed, eventually owning his own company.

Dedication

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dedication is the price you pay to get what you want. It is the amount of time you are willing to work on something to achieve your dreams. It's easy to dream - we were all born with the ability to dream.

And, it is easy to start to take action towards reaching your dream. But that's where the successful people separate themselves from the not-so-successful. The not-so-successful people look for excuses why they can't do it. They give up or they give in.

Successful people know that in order to finish first, you must first finish. They have a stick-to-it attitude. They understand that their mental and physical resources are much greater than they can imagine.

"Others can stop you temporarily. Only you can do it permanently." -- Edge Keynote

Determination

"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination." -- Tommy Lasorda

If you are a basketball fan, you probably have heard the name, Bill Bradley. Or, maybe you have heard of Senator Bill Bradley (N.J.). Prior to his All-American and All-NBA fame, Bill Bradley developed a work ethic and a willingness to pay the price to achieve his dreams.

Bradley was a deadly shooter - but that did not come automatically to Bradley. After basketball practice, Bradley would stay behind to work on his shooting - making 15 shots in a row from five spots on the floor.

If he missed one shot, anywhere on the floor, he would begin his routine all over again. He would not leave until he made 75 shots in a row. This shooting regime accompanied Bradley to Princeton University and to the New York Knicks. But where did he develop such drive and commitment?

He attended basketball camp that was put on by professional basketball player, Ed Macauley. Macauley lectured to his campers, "When you're not practicing, somewhere someone is. And when the two of you meet, given roughly equal ability, he will win." Bradley took that to heart - hour after hour, shot after shot. For his four year high school career, Bill Bradley scored over 3,000 points.

"I found that I could find the energy... that I could find the determination to keep going. I learned that your mind can amaze your body, if you just keep telling yourself, I can do it, I can do it, I can do it!" -- Jon Erickson
____________
Tom Hughes is a coach, educator, author, and motivational speaker. Without a doubt, the most important determinant to your success is what your belief and expectation of your success is. Every sales rep already has an image of what their results are going to be, a number, if you will, of how much they are worth and how much they are going to earn, and it is that image that will always determine your results.

Not the economy, not your leads, not your territory or the price of your product. Rather, your belief and expectation of your performance is the biggest predictor of your results. What you believe will happen, happens. What you think about all day long becomes your reality. If you don’t believe me, ask yourself this:

Isn’t it true that what you are currently thinking about all day long, in every area of your life, is exactly how your life currently is? Think about your weight, your income, your success, your relationships – aren’t they the mirror image of what you think about all day long?

Of course they are. That’s why the only way to really change anything in your life is to first change how you think about it. There are hundreds of great books about The Law of Attraction, and I recommend you buy some of them and read and apply the truth immediately, but the bottom line is that until you change your currently dominate self-image or picture, your results won’t change.

And that’s where affirmations come in. The proper use of carefully crafted affirmations can and will change your image, your actions and your results faster and more effectively than any other tool you have access to. The problem is that most people give up on affirmations because of one big mistake they make at the beginning:

They set their goals too high and because of that, their affirmations are unbelievable. The fact is, most people who write affirmations make them so unrealistic that their subconscious minds reject them and so they feel they are just lying to themselves, and, in a sense, they are. That’s why they stop using them after just a few days.

For example, if you make $2,500 a month in commissions, and you read a book on sales or goal setting and affirmations and get fired up and think you can make $5,000 or $7,500 the next month or two, chances are you will have some self talk that says, “Who are you kidding?” And it is that voice that will win out and in short order you will go back to earning your old self-image of $2,500 a month.

The solution is to make incremental increases that you can truly believe in. For example, can you actually see yourself making $3,000 a month, or $3,300 a month? Which amount truly feels like a realistic (and yet still stretches you a little) goal that you can really believe in? Once you determine what truly feels achievable, set a goal around it and begin affirming how it feels now that you’re earning that amount.

This is the proper use of affirmations and you will go much further by setting realistic goals and then achieving them. In three or four months, you can revise that goal higher because the more you achieve the more you will believe you can achieve.

If you have given up on affirmations because they never worked for you, then revisit them today and develop ones that you can believe in. Then begin using them immediately. Remember, the fastest way to change your results is to change your image of what is possible for yourself, and using affirmations, properly, is the most effective way to do that.
______________
Mike Brooks, Mr. Inside Sales, works with business owners and inside sales reps nationwide teaching them the skills, strategies and techniques of top 20% performance. By Gary Ryan Blair

Because establishing goals is so important, you should put a great deal of time and mental effort into the process. The more specific your vision, the more likely you are to organize yourself around it.

For example if your goal is to "increase business", you have nothing on which to develop an organizational strategy. The statement is too vague, and the time frame open-ended.

If however you say, "I want to increase my personal contribution to revenues by 30 percent in the next 18 months," then you have begun to shape your vision. You have defined clear goals and set the time frame.

The goal is still a bit fuzzy, though, you can do better. What elements of revenue are within your control? Once you answer this question you can hone your vision even further.

The end result should be like; "MY goal is to close three of the ten prospects I am working on in order to increase my contribution to company revenues by 30 percent in the next 18 months.

Now you have something to sink your teeth into. You have set the goal, clearly defined the vision, and established a reasonable time frame and end result.

From this point on you can break your goal into manageable bites, focusing on each step needed to close the three deals. The process becomes easy because the goal and vision is specific.

Everything Counts!
Gary Ryan Blair
_________________
Gary Ryan Blair is President of The GoalsGuy. A lot of people tell me that they haven't gotten around to setting life-time goals and identifying their values and coming up with specific, measurable bench marks, etc...

They tell me that goal setting takes too much time and energy, and that it will require days and weeks of work and that once they have the goals they'll start to feel bad if they don't reach them.

Some of the time people tell me they do have goals, but when I ask them about what they are, they come up with vague wants and “Gee, I hope I get some day" items that change with each paycheck.

Sound familiar?

While life-time goal setting does require an initial investment of time and energy, the payoff is immediate and life changing. The good news, however, is that identifying and writing down even short term goals will give you the same benefits, and setting short term goals is a quick and effective way to develop momentum, build confidence and get some meaningful things accomplished.

If you want to see your life change in just 3 to 6 months, then follow these 5 quick rules for setting short term goals. As you'll see, accomplishing just one short term goal can change your life beyond your wildest dreams!

Secret #1: Grab a calendar. Pick a short term, manageable 3 to 6 month period to set your goals in. Short term goals tend to get you into action right away, are easier to visualize, and because of their short term nature they encourage you to set realistic, easy to accomplish goals.

Secret #2: Pick just 2 or 3 goals to work with. Don’t get overwhelmed by trying to change every area of your life. Just pick a couple of areas that you want to begin changing in the next few months.

Secret #3: The goals you pick don’t have to be fully accomplished in the time period you’ve identified. This is the key! Rather, what you’re looking to do in the next 3 to 6 months is to simply develop momentum, establish a pattern, and begin getting you excited about your life again.

Great areas to set short term goals in are things like:

* Beginning or resuming an exercise routine and setting a goal to be so far along in the time frame you’ve set.
* Increasing your closing percentage by a reasonable amount.
* Having read or begun listening to a couple of books.
* Joined a dating site and begun dating again.
* Taking up or resuming a favorite hobby again.

Remember at the beginning I wrote that setting even short term goals can be a life-changing event? I know of someone who had a goal of finding and developing a serious relationship, and his short term goal was simply to join a dating site and begin dating. Well, he did that, met someone in 2 weeks, and now 6 months later, they are engaged to be married! You see, even short term goals can change your life!

Secret #4: Write your goals down. You’ve heard over and over again how much more effective goal setting is when you write your goals down. It’s totally true. Once you’ve identified your 2 or 3 goals, write down in detail what it is you want to accomplish, or what stage you want to be in at the end of the time period you’ve chosen.

Once you’ve done that, get a three by five card and write out an affirmation paragraph that describes in detail how you will feel once you’ve reached that goal. Keep it in the first person as if you’ve already accomplished that goal. Not: “I can’t wait to feel…” Rather: “It feels so good now that I’m…”

Secret #5: Make a list and start identify right now, today, what actions you can take to move you closer to your goals. Can you join a gym? Buy new walking shoes? Make 10 more cold calls today? Fill out a profile on a dating site? Take your kids to the park tonight?

Make a list of actions you can take today and take them!

Do the same thing tomorrow and get in the habit of taking an action each day to move you closer to your goals.

Follow this 5-Step method of setting short term goals and I guarantee you that your life will change 3 to 6 months from now.
______________
Mike Brooks, Mr. Inside Sales, works with business owners and inside sales reps nationwide teaching them the skills, strategies and techniques of top 20% performance. By Pegine Echevarria

I have got to tell you that it is wonderful to achieve a goal! There is nothing quite like setting a goal, planning for it, taking daily steps and them one day WHAM-OO you accomplish the task. That happened to me today.

Back in September 08 I read that 'normal' people can work up to 100 push ups a day. I laughed and thought no way. There is no way that I – in the shape I was in - could work myself up to 100 push ups a day. That was reserved for skinny, exercise fanatics with rippling bodies. That was reserved for soldiers and Marines. That goal was definitely not for a middle aged, full figured, feisty female.

...”Yet” I thought “Why not?”

I tell people that if they have a goal, write a plan and work the plan then they can achieve results. You will have obstacles and you will face challenges, however, if you stay true to the plan you will achieve.

Now, I was ready to challenge myself, to practice what I preach, that was until I got down, put my palms flat on the floor and began to push up. I was pushing but nothing was going up. Evidently I needed to really start from scratch. I got on my knees and did very modified three push ups. Well, I called them push ups. I went down, a bit, and went up, a bit, sort of. Give me a break, it was day one.

On the website one hundred push ups I read and learned about push ups. I decided it didn’t matter how long it took. I was going to do 100 push ups in a day.

I went from those first 3 knee push ups to 60 military push ups pretty quickly... then the holidays took over, my arm was sore, I had several “I don’t wanna do it” days in a row and my motivation began to wane.

I truly believe that there are five areas of our lives that we can work on to reach our potential. The areas are physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and fiscal. I think of these areas as graphs in our lives. Some areas are stronger than others. It is our job to strengthen them all. Our job is to build our capacity to reach our highest levels in each area – no matter where we are today. By the way, this is an ongoing project, just when you think you have reached your highest level another level is revealed. If this is not happening to you there is a strong possibility that you are not living to your highest potential.

Physical: I admit that this is one of my weakest areas. I have a strong heart, low cholesterol, good blood pressure and now I can say I am strong. However other parts of my body....well let’s just say that some of today’s movie stars and I couldn’t share clothes. Does that mean that I stop striving to take care of me... no. It just means that I will continue to build my confidence in physical self. One push up at a time.

Emotional: I am strong here now, however if you asked family members when I was younger (and even several years ago) that was not the case. It has taken dedication, perseverance, soul searching, challenging myself and appreciating who I’ve become to be able to say that everyone can be strong, feisty, fearless, fun, focused and courageous. Follow the path and you will achieve.

Spiritual: What you think is what you get. Your faith, your belief and your actions are all interrelated. It is important to take the time during your day to just be. Are you listening to what you are creating with your thoughts? Your thoughts connect you to your Higher Power, God, Universe or energy. Taking the time to really focus on what you are thinking. It is so powerful, motivating, and inspiring that without that quiet time you lose perspective about who you are, what your life is about and why you do what you do.

Intellectual: We are lucky that we aren’t the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, we don’t have to wish for a brain...we already have one. Our brains need nourishment. If we don’t provide information, new ideas, new intellectual challenges our brains lose their potential. Read books, watch documentaries, push yourself to learn the other side of an argument and listen to counter perspective. Grow your brain so that you grow.

Fiscal: Money management, financial literacy, prosperity thinking and abundance are all key ingredients to a healthy and full life. Too often people have covered their heads in the sand because of lack of knowledge. I’ve learned that there are always people who can teach you what you don’t know. It is so liberating.

I personally found such freedom learning about profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cost analysis, cash flow analysis, tax implications and balancing a budget. There is so much I am looking forward to learning about financial success. It is freeing and so exhilarating. Take the time to learn so you can be free.

And the rest of the story....

So there I was with the “don’t wanna” swirling around me. Luckily I came out of that dizzy spell and recommitted to my goal. Today I get to shout, cheer and receive the applause because I did it... I did 100 push ups.

How about you? What’s your goal? What are you working toward? When are you going to get out of the dizzy “Don’t wanna” game? Join me and be joyous... shouting from the roof tops... I did it!

-- Pegine
_________________
Pegine Echevarria has well over 15 years of experience as a nationally recognized expert on success, leadership, and teambuilding, and 30 years of experience in the workplace, ranging from corporate America to public service. I got the idea from a playwright who had done something similar. She wrote a play every day for a year.

I liked the boldness of that ambition. It seemed to me that it was the kind of goal that could change a life. It did for that playwright. One of the plays she wrote made her famous.

I have written poetry on and off my whole life, but never seriously. Maybe, I thought, I could improve my skills and even write some good poems this way. There were no guarantees, but I was optimistic that something good would come of it.

When I revealed my personal goal to AWAI members last year, I recommended that they set an equally ambitious goal for themselves related to copywriting. Read a new promotion every day, I suggested. Or write one.

Many people who read that article in The Golden Thread probably thought I was dreaming. “What’s the point of making a resolution you can’t possibly keep,” one person wrote me.

I was concerned – maybe even a little afraid – that the objective was too grandiose. And that I wouldn’t follow through.

But I was also hopeful. The cleverness of the idea was the sheer size of it. By setting a super-sized career goal, I thought one could break through a lifetime of failed smaller objectives. An Extra-Extra-Extra-Large New Year’s resolution might be big enough to crash through whatever psychological barriers were holding one back.

That was the idea. And guess what? It worked for me. I did write 365 poems in 365 days. I skipped a few days when I was busy traveling, but I made up for them when I had spare time. Many of the poems I wrote were only a few lines. And many weren’t very good. But at the end of the year, I had more than 100 poems that were – according to a few editors I sent them to – good enough to publish.

So that’s what I’m working on now: publishing them in literary journals and collecting them for my first book of poetry. It feels good to have accomplished this goal. It feels great to have improved my skills as a poet.

This brings us back to you. Did you read that article last year? Did you set any similar goals related to your career as a copywriter?

If so, we would really like to hear about it. We’d like to know, in particular, how tough it was, how you coped with whatever setbacks you encountered, and what you gained from the experience.
If you didn’t make a gargantuan resolution last year, consider doing it now for next year. You know how quickly time flies. And with every passing year, it will move more quickly. Seize the day, as they say. Capture the moment. Make this your year for taking a quantum leap forward.

To remind you, here is what I suggested last year:

Set some unthinkably big task for yourself that, when completed at the end of the year, will have made you a much stronger and more highly compensated writer.

And my specific suggestion:

Write one effective mini-advertisement per day. If you’d like to take on that goal, here’s how you can do it in a way that might also dramatically increase your income:

1. Get on the mailing lists (snail mail and Internet) of six or eight direct-marketing businesses you’d like to work for. (Long-term AWAI members should have already done this.)

2. Build a “swipe file” (that is, a borrower’s library) of ads that these companies are currently using.

3. Every day, before you do any other work, take out one of the ads from your swipe file and study it.

Spend 15 to 30 minutes figuring out what the copywriter is attempting to do, evaluating how well he’s doing it, and identifying other approaches that might work equally well or even better.

4. Pick one of those alternate approaches and make that your daily assignment.

5. Spend the next 30 to 45 minutes writing and editing a little ad based on the theme you’ve chosen.

6. When you are done, file the completed mini-ad in a large envelope addressed to the CEO or marketing director of the company it applies to.

7. Once a month, send out all those envelopes (each of which will contain one or several samples of your work). Include a letter that briefly explains who you are and why you are sending them this free copy. The letter should be some version of: “I admire your business and hoped that, if you saw what I could do, you might have a spot for me on your freelance rotation.”

Don’t spend any more than 60 minutes a day completing this task.

In the beginning, you will find that you will be able to write only a limited number of words. But as the weeks pass, you will see your speed improve dramatically.

You’ll almost certainly double the speed at which you write. You may quadruple or quintuple it. And you’ll also see that the quality of your writing will improve – which may surprise you, considering how much faster you are getting. You will have sharper, more tangible ideas. Your language will be crisper and cleaner.

The trick is to focus on quality, not quantity. So your daily objective will be to come up with just one good marketing idea – and then, when you have it, to write it as simply and powerfully as possible.

If you don’t want to do this every single day of the year, make it a workday goal … which would mean you’d be writing about 250 little ads this year and sending them out to potential clients. That goal is plenty big. And it allows you two days a week to do something else first thing in the morning.

In addition to this “write one ad a day this year” idea, here are some other “unthinkably” big goals to consider:

• Learn a marketing secret a day.
• Scan an educational book a day.
• Contact a potential client a day.
• Call/write a friend a day.
• Practice a self-promotional speech a day.

Identifying your goal is the first step. As soon as you do that … and I hope you do it today … write it down. Then tomorrow … get started!
__________
Live the Life You Want
How would you like a lifestyle that allows you to pick your own hours, live anywhere in the world, and take as many vacations as you care to? One that lets you work from your home – from anywhere in the world for that matter – doing work that is interesting and prestigious, work that you can be proud of? Now you can …

-Keep in mind that the advice above is fitting no matter what your particular goal centers around. Do something today that will move you closer towards making your dream a reality!... And remember, it's your life, LIVE BIG! They have to be set just right in order to be most effective. If they are set too close - close enough for us to touch them - then they aren't goals but reality. If they are set so far away that we can't see them, then we forget that they exist and we live only in our current reality.

So what are your goals? Have you reviewed them lately? Are they far enough away to make you work, stretch and strive for them, yet close enough for them to be firmly in your sights?

Action Point: Sit down today and restate your primary 6-month goal in the following categories: Physical, emotional, financial, career, family, and spiritual. Then write them down on a small card and put it somewhere where you will see it regularly.
_________________
Chris Widener is a popular speaker and writer as well as the President of Made for Success, a company helping individuals and organizations turn their potential into performance, and succeed in every area of their lives and achieve their dreams. Visit his web site and take advantage of the many resources available -- while you're there be sure to take advantage of his newsletters.

*brought to you by GoalsSuccess.com

Here’s How to Set and Accomplish Any Goal, even when you Hit a Dead End! By Ted Charles

Nothing is more unfortunate than the saddening fact that most people will never ever make it in life. What a bitter pill to swallow? Most people have no focus, no direction and no course of action! Simply speaking, we barely know what we want. Add to this, most of us don’t have a clue where we are going?

Think of an aimless wanderer venturing into the unknown. Borne out by research, the statistics are out and the results are nothing short of disheartening. The experts are telling us that an estimated 5-10% of all humanity seldom think of their goals. Out of this, only a paltry 1-3% have clear written goals. It pains the heart when you think what happens to the remaining 90%! With an estimated global population of six billion souls and counting, you do the math.

People with clear goals always succeed because they know where they are going. Goal setting isn’t exactly rocket science. The sooner you get started, the better. Avoid the temptation to go hog wild with a mere wish list instead of practical goals. Why not give these few pointers a spin, and set of your life kicking into high gear.

First and Foremost, write your goals on paper! This simple task is so priceless yet it hardly crosses our minds. Charting a clear road map to your success makes the difference between living the high life and languishing from hand to mouth. Whatever you want to achieve, just grab a pen and paper or switch to your computer and write down those goals. It doesn’t matter. Even your New Year’s resolutions. Just list them down.

Start Small. You never climb from the top. Goals don’t always have to be big. Begin with something realistic. Most important of all, they should be challenging but achievable. When you set the bar too high, you are already laying down the path for setbacks, failure and heartbreak.

By now, you should differentiate between goals, wishes and dreams. When you ask people what their goals are, they give vague statements like “I want to be rich”, “I want to be successful”, “I want a good job”, “I want to be healthy”, “I want this and that” and so forth. For crying out loud, be specific! Remember the rule of SMART goals? Set your goals complete with date and time. Break them down into small, manageable units.

You can’t bite more than you can chew. As the adage goes, “By the yard it’s hard, but inch by inch it’s a cinch!”.

It’s no secret, the path to realizing your goals is filled with all kinds of challenges and endless distractions. What sets you apart from the rest is your commitment to concentrate and focus your time, energy and resources on one single objective. This is no time to get excited chasing trivial pursuits or getting carried away by aimless distractions. Everybody is desperately trying to accomplish so much, in such short time. And when everything comes a cropper, they call it quits. To get to the promised land, you need to set careful targets and avoid losing sight of your destination.

Nothing comes on a silver platter. Not even for the super achievers. No major accomplishment was realized without wading through a myriad of obstacles and failures! How do you keep the faith when your patience and fighting spirit takes a serious beating? A story is told of Thomas Edison when he was working on the world’s first light bulb. After countless hours of failure after failure, it took him over three thousand attempts before discovering how to make the light bulb work. Without unwavering faith, your goals are doomed to fail.

So how does one cultivate motivation and persistence? The answer lies in asking yourself the big “WHY?”. Get this and you got everything wrapped up in no time flat. We are not sure what Edison had in mind. Only Edison himself knew exactly “WHY” he so desperately wanted to make that light bulb work.

Ask yourself WHY? You will be surprised at the hurdles you can overcome. Why do I want to build a dream house? Why do I want better education? Why do I want to buy a car? Why do I want to lose weight? Why or why do I want to take my family to Disneyland next summer? With a whole bunch of big enough “Whys”, the target remains within your reach no matter what resistance comes your way.

Feelings of self-doubt will start to creep in and probably grind you to a halt. How do you know whether you will succeed or ruin everything? In addition to this is the fear of friends, co-workers and even family laughing at if you fail. Never mind. These nay sayers might come in handy if only to stretch you to the max. Don’t let them put you down.

Truth is, many of these fears are absolutely unfounded. In spite of the difficulties, learning not to let mere words bring you down is a must. Reason with your fears and more often than not, you will realize there’s no reason to be fearful in the first place. Don’t under-estimate yourself. Avoid the urge to slack off. When faced with these kinds of criticisms, just laugh them off. Take it from me, it truly helps.

Lastly, Procrastination is the thief of time. Time wastage and putting off things to a “later” date can go down in the annals of history as one of mankind’s greatest cardinal sins. What do you think would have happened had the Wright brothers put off tinkering with their ground-breaking invention for another time? Some lucky soul would have jumped at the opportunity, perfected the flying machine and gone down in history as the pioneer of Aviation industry. It’s about time to get out of your comfort zones and flush this procrastination bug down the toilet. So how do you rid this monster? Start by setting a strict schedule and stick to it to the very end. Time and tide surely waits for no man.

The road map to success is no bed of roses. Everybody gets spanked along the way. It doesn’t matter a lick if you get beaten. What counts is how you handle defeat and whether you have the nerve to keep fighting. Think of goal setting as muscle building. The more muscle you use, the stronger it gets.

Without a shadow of doubt, having rock-hard abs and that six-pack or sporting an attractive figure is the stuff of dreams. You don’t just rush to bench press hefty weights the first time you hit the gym. Building muscle is a gradual process. With time, the muscles acquire strength and the ability to withstand pain. And so is goal setting. Once you are ready to handle resistance, you can take on bigger pursuits. Get started with a few “warm-up” goals. Sooner than later, you will be schmoozing to mighty high success of epic proportions.
_________________
Ted Charles has created a power-packed guide which can help you accomplishing almost any Goal, with minimum effort. When I started my sales career, one of the first things we were taught was to "Keep It Simple, Salesman." Communicate in such a way that your message is unmistakably clear. If the message is not clear, the prospect ends up confused and confused people seldom take action.

This advice can be followed in any field of endeavor. For example, in marathon running today we utilize sports psychologists, computerized training regimens, and running shoes that are "state-of-the-art." Perhaps all of that is necessary if you want to win the big race. I'm not denying that these things help, but Toshihiko Seko didn't need them to win the Boston Marathon.

I was tremendously impressed a dozen years ago when Toshihiko Seko won the Boston Marathon. His training program was simplicity itself and Toshihiko explained it with twelve words: "I run ten kilometers in the morning and twenty in the evening." At this point you probably think, "There's a catch!" But this plan enabled him to outrun the world's greatest, fastest, most gifted runners. When Seko was told that his plan seemed too simple when compared to that of other marathoners, he replied, "The plan is simple, but I do it every single day, 365 days a year."

It is my conviction that most people fail to reach their goals not because their plans are too simple or too complicated. Most people don't reach their goals because they're not committed and willing to follow their own plans.

Many of our goals do not require detailed plans, but all of them require that we must follow the plan we have. Seko's plan was effective because he followed it every day. You can't get more simple than that! Follow Seko's example, make certain your plan to reach your goal is simple, then follow it carefully. Be accountable to yourself and I'll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
_________________
Zig Ziglar offers a weekly newsletter filled with more of his inspiring stories as well as practical ideas to help you in the areas of sales, marketing, customer service, and related topics. But sooner or later, you will pay the price of inefficiency.

Find out what successful people do and then do it. Find out what failures do and don't do it.

Here are the top 10 Mistakes that Rob You of Your Goals ...

1) Waking up and then trying to figure out what you are going to do that day based on what you feel like doing. High performing men and women know days, weeks and sometimes even months or years in advance what their tasks and time lines are. At the very least until you get the hang of it, plan your next day in advance, at least the night before and once you get the hang of it, plan your entire week in advance.

2) Not having your tasks prioritized. When planning your day and mapping out your projects, figure out which activities should be done and in the precise order based upon importance. Create a written list and on the list, number which items are to be completed and in which sequence. 1 is most important, 2 is next most important, etc. Do them in the order of priority.

3) Doing it all yourself AKA Not using professionals because you think you can't afford it. It takes you at least 10 times longer to learn how to clumsily carry out a task that a specialist can do in a few minutes. You can't be outstanding at your specialty if you're trying to be everyone, and do everything yourself, ie webmaster, accountant, publicist, janitor, grass cutter, etc. (Because you try to do it all yourself is precisely the reason you can't afford it). You will never reach optimum efficiency with this approach. It's like driving a car with one foot on the break. Hire professionals and let them do what they do best.

4) Not having a mentor. A mentor is someone you can emulate. A mentor is someone you can model who will show you the ropes, saving you valuable time, energy and money. A mentor has been there and done that and can spare you from making a multitude of unnecessary mistakes.

5) Not having a Coach. A Coach is different from a mentor, as a coach can zero in on helping you advance specific Goals and stay focused on the tasks necessary to achieve them.

6) Spending time on things that are unnecessary. Spending valuable hours disinfecting your desk, reorganizing your file cabinets and dusting your keyboard with a Qtip in the middle of the workday is the ultimate procrastination. If those things must be done, do them before your workday begins or after the workday ends. You won't waste the hours when it's taking away from your fun time.

7) Not working on yourself. My mentor taught me to work harder on myself than I do on my business. I still practice reading and listening to motivational tapes first thing in the morning every morning and all throughout the day. Doing this equips me with the mindset needed to go confidently into the day with a positive mindset.

8) Spending large amounts of time and energy with others who do not work on themselves. Getting around other focused, motivated people with Goals, dreams of their own will inspire you. Their positive energy is contagious. Ask your friends, what they are reading, what they are working on, what their goals are. You become like the people you hang around. Hang around a crowd that challenges you to grow and be your best.

9) Not taking time to celebrate when you reach a goal. Give yourself the gift of reveling in your achievement. You will habitually learn to tap deeper into your own internal reservoir of motivation when you know there's a pot of Gold of your own design waiting for you.

10) Not having a long term vision to empower you. If all you are doing is racking up a bunch of meaningless tasks, you are merely killing time. Know your purpose for each activity and know how that purpose relates and contributes to the bigger picture of your life, which ultimately gives your time and life greater meaning.

Any one of these habits may seem like a tiny matter, but when accumulated and repeated over a span of days, weeks, months or years, they will prevent you from realizing your dreams.
_________________
Jill Koenig, the "Goal Guru" is America's Top Goal Strategist. This is the least exciting part of the journey of any Goal, but I assure you it is one of the most important. This is where it gets a little tricky due to the fact that every Goal is different. Each Goal has it's own unique targets, time lines, and action plans, therefore it will require it's own unique system and schedules for measuring.

Not every Goal needs to be measured, just your most critical ones. For example, if on the weekends you take guitar lessons to explore your interest in learning how to play, you don't necessarily need a plan for measuring your progress. But for your highest priority Goals, you absolutely do. If you are building a business or trading in the stock market, your very financial existence relies upon your systems for tracking.

People often seek my coaching and assistance because they are stuck in some way. They say, "I am stuck! I have tried everything and nothing works!" The first thing I do is ask for their gauges, measurements and stats for the related area. Often they reply with blame or excuses about the economy or some outside circumstance for why they are off track and never is that the real reason for a decline.

The reason for almost all struggle, stagnation and lack of growth is due to a lack of attention, measurement or action in the critical areas. It is usually a matter of neglect and fortunately there is a quick and easy solution to create a major turnaround.

The fastest way to create a breakthrough is to measure and examine the critical areas of your Goal.

You cannot change what you don't measure. You cannot improve what you don't measure. Where focus goes, energy flows so begin focusing on your major key areas that are critical to your success.

Tracking reveals the true reality of a situation. Many Goals can be measured with numbers. For example, Health Goals provide many numbers to monitor your progress; pounds, inches, blood sugar, triglycerides, blood pressure, as do a multitude of other precise diagnostic measurements.

Tracking builds confidence. When you have a great plan, are following it and producing phenomenal results, you automatically raise your own self-esteem and that optimism carries over into every other life area. Knowing that you are on track and having the validation of facts as proof gives you an enormous boost.

Tracking provides valuable feedback and indications of areas that may need to be addressed or adjusted. If your Goal is to lose weight and the numbers on the scale are going up, up, up each week, it could be an indication that you may need to re evaluate your plan or if you have a great plan and have not been following it, simply renew your dedication to it.

For every Goal that does not succeed, there are always numerous indicators along the way that would have provided a snapshot or a warning ahead of time and all throughout the journey, if the critical components would have been measured and appropriate action taken, the Goal could have been salvaged.

Your Action Plan:

1. Examine your highest and most important Goal and the key areas that will ensure it's success. What are the aspects you will need to measure so that you will know on any given day, at any given time, whether or not you are progressing on track?

2. List at least ten precise critical components you can begin measuring and tracking. (if you come up with more than ten, that's even better).

3. Create targets for each of the chosen areas. This can be done by looking at the end result and tracking backwards. What are the ideals you will need to achieve in order to successfully realize your Goal?

4. Create the most appropriate schedule for tracking and checking your gauges and schedule it into your planner. How often should you measure your metrics, stats and gauges and examine your progress? If the Goal has no end, as such with an ongoing business, you can certainly break it down via yearly, quarterly, monthly, daily and even weekly measurements.

Since each Goal is unique, your Goal will require unique systems and schedules for tracking it. By implementing this for all of your highest priority Goals, you will instantly begin to produce better results.

Goal Achieving abides by the Universal Law of Cause and Effect. If you don't like the results you are creating, change your approach, increase your efforts, modify your plan, but don't stick your head in the sand and neglect to see the truth of the situation.

The fastest way to improve your results is to measure your progress. So re examine your most cherished Goals and see where you stand. Your mind will instantly begin to search for ways to make improvements in those key areas.

Numbers don't lie. Welcome whatever data you receive and take the appropriate actions to ensure your success!

Live Your Dreams
_________________
Jill Koenig, the "Goal Guru" is America's Top Goal Strategist.
